Ichinisan (いちにいさん)

Ichinisan has multiple locations around Japan but this review is for the main location near Kotsukigawa in Kagoshima city. I highly recommend the steamed kurobuta (black pork) shabu shabu pictured below. You will get a wooden steamer box with a layer of vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, sliced carrots and onions), that the server will top with a layer of thinly sliced black pork. When the meat is cooked, in the third picture below, you can wrap the meat around the steamed vegetables and dip it in one of the nice sauces you get with the steamer boxes. It may not look like much but shabu shabu is healthy, filling, and delicious. On this particular occasion, I ordered a side dish of satsumaage (a local Kagoshima specialty that is essentially fish sausage, quite nice).

Dinner at this restaurant starts at 3,500 JPY per person for the basic course menu, or you can order the 4,500 JPY set or the 6,000 JPY set for the super hungry diner. One tactic to avoid breaking your wallet when dining with just one friend is to order one course menu and an extra set of either vegetables or meat to share. It all depends on how stuffed you’d like to be at the end of your meal. Ichinisan is absolutely worth a visit. If you’re worried about price, I’ve heard that the lunch menu is much cheaper and just as delicious.
